Others informations: The Camponotus genus comprises about 2,111 taxa and are known as carpenter ants. This work will cover a study of four species: Camponotus atriceps, Camponotus renggeri, Camponotus vittatus, and Camponotus rufipes; all have wide distribution in Brazil. Little is known about its molecular structure and associations with endosymbionts. The objective of this work is the molecular characterization of these species of Camponotus, as well as investigation of the presence and frequency of occurrence of endobacterias Wolbachia and Blochmannia in different colonies with molecular tools and Confocal microscopy.

2011 – 2013 Type of contract: scholarship, Master Student -Functional Placement: Exclusive Dedication.     Others Informations: The Camponotus textor is a weaver ant species, which builds its nest from silk produced by their own larvae. There are few studies on this species and these end up addressing behavior, genetics, and phylogeny endosymbionts. According to literature data, the sequencing of cytochrome oxidase I gene has been widely used as a DNA barcoding differentiation and identification of species, and cytochrome oxidase II is one of the most widely used for studies on insects. Endobacterias occurrence reports are common in arthropods and it has been studied in ants. Among them may be noted the Blochmannia and Wolbachia. Thus, this paper carried out the sequencing fragment COI, tRNA, COII mitochondrial DNA from different colonies of Camponotus textor to be used as a molecular marker, making it a tool for determining the phylogenetic relationships between these settlements and related species.

2015 – Present Next Generation Sequencig Illumina MiSeq 2000- Microbiome of Polyrhachis and Camponotus.
The symbiotic interaction has been one reason for the evolution and biodiversity of species on the planet. More studies addressing different hosts show up needed to increase knowledge of the evolutionary significance of this association in nature. Ants belonging to the genus Camponotus and Polyrhachis  are contained in Camponotini tribe and they are closely related, in addition they have wide distribution, habits diversified, and are often associated with endosymbionts. However there are few studies in this area, so many questions remaining about these associations. According to the literature, the sequencing technique Next Generation Illumina MiSeq2000 can provide the discovery of microbiota associated with the host, being an excellent tool for the characterization of previously little-studied communities, such as microbial diversity associated with insects. Thus, through this technique, the present study aims to: i) explore the microbial community of several species of Polyrhachis (distributed in countries in Asia, Africa and Oceania) and Camponotus (in South America); II) verify that the Blochmannia and other endosymbionts associated co-evolve and codivergem from comparing the phylogeny of bacteria with the ants; III) to determine the form of transfer and the interaction of endosymbionts with different hosts; and IV) comparing the microbial host of related samples and different continents. This study may reveal important aspects of the biology of Polyrhachis and Camponotus genres, the influence of these endosymbionts such diverse groups as well as the nature of the types of symbiotic interactions involved

I am a evolutionary biologist and Ph.D.  from Brazil at UNESP – Rio Claro. I am currently working in Brazil, but in 2018  June I will be in Chicago, IL, USA at Moreau Lab at the Field Museum of Natural History.

Symbiotic interactions are responsible for the evolution of animal diversity on the planet. To better understand the evolutionary significance of this association in nature, further studies addressing a diversity of hosts across locations and developmental stages are necessary. Ants of the genera Polyrhachis (spiny ants) and Camponotus (carpenter ants), members of the Camponotini tribe, have wide distributions, and are closely related. In adittion, they exhibit generalist diets and habits, and are often associated with endosymbionts. However there are limited studies in this area, so there are many remaining questions about these associations. In addition I am also interested in phylogeography, evolutionary diversification and taxonomy.

Furthermore I are interested in how we can use molecular methods, next-generation sequencing, confocal microscopy to address these questions.
